PSLE Chinese Oral Exam Format
The PSLE Chinese Oral Examination is conducted between one student and two examiners. Students are given 10 minutes before the assessment to review the exam material – a reading passage and a short video. After this preparatory period, the assessment will begin.
There are two components to the PSLE Chinese Oral Exam:
Reading Aloud (20 Marks):
Students are asked to read a passage focusing on proper pronunciation, appropriate intonation, and clear enunciation. This section tests whether they will be able to audibly convey the written document.
Stimulus-Based Conversation (30 Marks):
Students are expected to discuss the topics related to the video they have previously watched. The discussion must include a reflection on the video and be connected to applications in society or their own experiences. The examiner will also ask questions to prompt further answers from the student. This section aims to test each students’ understanding and ability to converse on the subject of the video in regard to their own thoughts and experiences.
Key Evaluation Criteria
The key to mastering the PSLE Chinese Oral Examination is for students to understand what examiners look for during each section of the assessment.
Pronunciation and Intonation
Students are assessed on the accuracy of Mandarin pronunciation through Hanyu Pinyin and the articulation for each word. The intonation of words and sentences are also assessed based on the context of the content – a sentence ending in a question mark should be spoken with the correct intonation.
Fluency
Examiners evaluate the smoothness of speech, proper phrasing or sentences, and reading speed – having multiple awkward breaks or speaking too slowly can result in a lower score.
Vocabulary
Students are assessed on their use of diverse vocabulary and sentence structure. Each word or idiom used must be grammatically correct and contextually appropriate.
Comprehension
Students are also tested on their understanding of the topics or prompts provided. Answers must be relevant to the topic being discussed and substantiated with examples from personal experience or general knowledge.
Common PSLE Chinese Oral Examination Conversation Topics
Topics for the second section (conversation after watching a video prompt) include commonly encountered areas that are age-appropriate for P6 pupils.
General conversation topics include:
Hobbies – Playing sports, reading, or other leisure activities.
Family – Relationships between family members.
School Life – Classroom experiences, academic achievements, extracurricular activities, or school events.
Current Events – Topics revolving around recent news articles or global events.
Based on the trends of the past PSLE Chinese Oral topics, students might potentially encounter topics on:
Health – Discussions on mental and physical well-being.
Environment – Reflecting on issues like sustainability and climate change.
Favourite Foods and Places – Sharing personal favourites can test vocabulary diversity and descriptive abilities.
Societal Issues – Topics may involve broader social issues like public transport, smoking, or even crime.
Tips to Prepare for the PSLE Chinese Oral Examination
- Speak out loud when practicing. Read aloud in a normal tone and pace to improve pronunciation and fluency. Spend at least 10-15 minutes a day reading aloud – you can use newspaper articles or book excerpts to expand your range of vocabulary.
- Simulate the exam through role-play. Ask a family member or friend to practice with you. Alternate roles as examiner and student while discussing as many topics as possible, so you’re at ease with the format and the real deal won’t feel as intimidating.
- Mock exams help in building exam preparedness. By practicing under timed and mock conditions, you will develop the ability to think and speak on your feet. You can identify weak areas and fine-tune your answers before the final exam with it as well.
- Familiarise yourself with a range of oral topics. The more prepared you are with commonly tested topics, the more easily you’ll be able to respond during the actual exam with relevant ideas and phrases.
- Keep in mind what the examiners are assessing. Examiners assess mainly the clarity, fluency, and relevance of the responses. When answering, it is important to structure your answer in a way that the examiner can easily understand what you are saying and which part of the question you are addressing.
